An Introduction to Eyelid Surgery

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is a type of plastic surgery involving the correction of any defects, deformities, and disfigurations of the eyelids and in cosmetics, modifying the eyelids to make it look more aesthetically appealing by removing any excess skin, muscle, or fat.

Why Is It Done?

As a person ages, his eyelids may stretch as the muscles weaken and fat might accumulate above or below the eyelids, resulting in sagging or drooping. This not only makes one look older but also affects his vision. A person might be suffering from cancer around the eyelids or other illnesses which can cause deformities or defects in this region. Many war victims and survivors are permanently scarred in around the eyes and the resulting psychological impact can be traumatizing. In any of these cases, an eyelid surgery is performed to solve the problem, help the patient regain his self esteem, and lead a normal life.

It can also be performed for cosmetic purposes to make the eyes look younger and more alert, reducing the wrinkles and improving the shape, making it particularly popular among East Asians.

The Procedure

A routine procedure is performed by making an external surgical incision, by the use of a scalpel or a laser, along the skin lines of the upper and the lower eyelids. In patients with a darker skin tone, excess eyelid skin is often not removed to ensure white scars do not appear. Afterwards the surgeon carefully cuts and removes excess skin, muscle, and fat and then finally finishes by closing the cut. In surgeries involving the lower eyelids, a transconjunctival approach is used, making the incisions directly below the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid. The technique is also perfect for those patients that want extra fat removed or added to their eyelids.

After the operation, a special stitch known as a canthopexy is placed near the outer corner of the lower eyelid, allowing the eyelid’s position to remain fixed while it heals and the stitch dissolves completely in 4 to 5 weeks.

The duration of the whole operation on average is 2 to 3 hours long. The swelling and bruising resulting from the surgery can be expected to last for up to 2 weeks but the time period can be greatly reduced with the use of cool compresses within the first 48 hours; the final result of the surgery however does not become apparent until many months later. The healing process can be quickened by taking active part in light activities like walking and cycling and luckily you need not to compromise on your routine, or worry about the effectiveness of the surgery.

Male Plastic Surgery: A Rising Trend

Up until now, cosmetic surgery fell into a strictly female domain where men dared not venture. While cosmetic surgery is still more prevalent among females, there is a rising trend among males to get plastic surgery procedures. Although most are still a little hesitant to go under the knife, they are willing to opt for non-invasive procedures such as Botox, hair removal, and microdermabrasion.

Statistics show that male cosmetic surgery has actually increased by 273% since 1997. With 1 million cosmetic surgical procedures within the last year, the number still only accounts for 9.4% of the total cosmetic surgeries done. It does, however, show that a gradual increase is taking place.

Why the Increase?

There may be multiple reasons for the steady increase in male plastic surgery but chief among them seems to be social acceptance. Up until now it was taboo for a man to undergo a cosmetic surgical procedure. Now that it has become much more acceptable and not frowned upon, men have the confidence to opt for them.

Another reason for the change is the increased competition in the corporate world. It is no secret that the cut throat corporate world demands you to be in your best shape at all times. Presentation, aesthetics and your look play a great role in the dynamics that help you move forward in your career. With this concept in mind, more and more men are opting for a cosmetic surgical procedure allowing them to opt for a more masculine and younger look.

Up until now, cosmetic surgeries were strictly female territory. As the number of men opting for cosmetic surgeries increases it’s important to see how they differ from females when it comes to the type of cosmetic surgeries.

Male and Female Cosmetic Surgeries: Similarities and Differences

As there is an increase in the male surgical procedures, there is a distinct difference between the cosmetic procedures that men and women undergo. The main reason behind this is the obvious difference in the male and female body.

Strangely enough, the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures tackle the same areas albeit in a different manner.

Rhinoplasty and Facelifts are two cosmetic procedures that are equally popular among the two genders whereas eyelid surgery follows closely.

Most Popular Cosmetic Surgical Procedures for Men

The most popular male surgical procedures today include the following:

Nose Reshaping

Rhinoplasty is one procedure that both genders simply love. Whether it’s a drastic change or a subtle one, rhinoplasty has a way of completely changing the way you look. Nose reshaping entails sculpting the nose by making it bigger or smaller in size and changing the angle between the nose and the upper lip.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery entails removing the excess fat from the eyelid and removing the dark circles under the eye to give the face a fresher look. An eyelid surgery typically takes about 10 days to recover after the procedure has been done. Its best to refrain from contact lenses for about 2 weeks and stick to the trusted old glasses until the recovery time has elapsed.

In this cosmetic procedure, excess fat and tissue is removed from the abdominal area. In some cases, doctors may even opt for ab reshaping. A tube is inserted into the skin and used to remove the excess fat through suction.

Breast Reduction in Men

Also known as Gynescomastia, breast reduction in men is a procedure that removes the excess fatty tissue from around the breasts. The doctor may even reshape the pectoral area according to the preference of the patient. This problem is more common than you would think. About 40 to 60% of males suffer from this condition which may affect either one or both of the breasts.

This entails tightening the skin around the face and reducing the number of wrinkles. Face lifts are great if you want to get rid of the lines that have appeared on the skin. The recovery time for this procedure is typically 10 days to 3 weeks.

Striking Differences in Plastic Surgery Around the World

Plastic Surgery Around the WorldJust as fashion, makeup and other trends are different around the world, plastic surgery also varies from one country to another. This difference really stems from the fact that beauty, or what is considered beautiful, varies greatly from one culture to the next. Men and women around the world turn to plastic surgery in unique ways to empower them and highlight the beautiful qualities of their ethnicity.

Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting plastic surgery procedures around the world:

Eyelid Surgery in South Korea: In South Korea it is common place to attach your picture to your job application or school application. Doing this puts even more pressure on physical appearance. In South Korea plastic blepharoplasty is performed on many young men and women to achieve the “open eyed” look they are longing for. The surgery focuses on making the eyes larger and slightly “western” looking.

Penis Enlargements in Greece: Yes, it’s true. Although a rather expensive procedure, it’s possible for a male to increase his “girth” size. Greece has recently become the leader in terms of the total number of penis enlargements performed. Penis enlargements are performed over 10 times more in Greece than other countries.

Men Around the World are Getting Chiseled Chins: An new procedure that men in different countries are going for is neck liposuction. Across cultures, a strong jawline is considered attractive and now plastic surgeons can make that feature possible for those with less than jaw lines. Some men are even getting chin implants to achieve the strong jawline they desire.

Labia Surgery in Germany: In Germany women are opting for labia surgery. This procedure, which is also referred to as labiaplasty, reduces extra folds on the labia and reshapes the structure of the labia to make it more “visually pleasing”. The surgery only takes about 2 hours and is available in many countries around the world.

Lipo-Filling in France: Women in France now are having fat taken from their thighs and tummies and using that as a way of plumping up their breasts during breast augmentation surgeries. This is a double whammy, less fat where you don’t want it, and larger breasts.

Silicone Buttox Implants in Venezuela: Women in Venezuela have gone nuts for curvy bottoms. There have been a record number of butt implants performed in this country. Women need to be sure to go to a reputable plastic surgeon for this procedure.

Eyebrow Transplants in the US: This trend can be directly linked to the fashion runways. As thick eyebrows have become all the rave on the runways, plastic surgeons have recently developed an eyebrow transplant procedure to give those with “less than” eyebrows the full look they are longing for.

As beauty evolves around the world so will plastic surgery procedures. You can count on trends to change and develop depending on what is considered popular and desired in every culture around the world. It’s usually surprising to see what lengths other cultures will go to when it comes to attaining beauty as defined by their own standards.

The Ins and Outs of Cosmetic Surgery: Most Popular Cosmetic Surgical Procedures

Some of us may not be entirely happy with the way we look and although one may be content, there might be some room for improvement. Whether it’s a nose that is a little askew or an eyelid that is raiding unwanted territory, cosmetic surgical procedures to correct such issues have gained popularity over the years.

This is especially true for the US where there are more than 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures take place annually. This number doesn’t even include the 8.4 million minimally invasive plastic surgery procedures that are done every year.

There are many cosmetic surgical procedures on the rise today. Each surgical procedure is aimed towards the aesthetic improvement of one or other aspect. Whether its weight loss, skin tightening, anti ageing or even straightening or plumping, cosmetic surgical procedures have come a long way since their beginning.

The increased safety in surgical methods has made it a viable option for many individuals. In fact, cosmetic surgery’s becoming increasingly popular among people looking to modify their physical appearance. Some of the most popular methods of cosmetic surgery include rhinoplasty, liposuction, and the face lift.

Liposuction is incredibly popular in the USA. This procedure entails the removal of fat through the insertion of tube under the surface of the skin. Suction is done through a vacuum like procedure in order to remove excess fat and shape the body. This procedure is most commonly done on the abdomen, Upper arms, thighs and the buttocks.

The perfect nose can sometimes be a rare thing. Luckily, those of us who weren’t gifted with one in the genetic lottery can simply go towards Rhinoplasty. Better known as the Nose job this seems to be the most common procedure. It entails the sculpting of the nose in order to change its size and shape. The nose job may entail making the nose smaller or bigger, changing the angle between the upper lip and the nose, and even reducing the span of the nostrils. A rhinoplasty procedure typically takes about 3 weeks to recover from while it is suggested to be careful of impact and not to tan until 8 weeks after surgery.

Tummy Tuck

Damn those belly rolls! As the name suggests, this procedure entails shaping the abdominal area and flattening the skin by removal of the extra skin and fat. The stomach muscles are then tightened. 96% of the tummy tuck procedures in the USA are administered on women.

Breast Lift

A mastopexy or a breast lift is a surgical procedure in which women want to raise and reshape breasts which have sagged as a result of old age. The surgeon will typically remove the extra skin and reposition the remaining tissue.

Face Lift

While there isn’t really any lifting being done in the face lift, it is a great way of getting rid of those lines. The excess fat is removed from the face as the muscles are tightened and the skin redraped. The face lift enhances the appearance of the skin by tightening the area on the neck and face. This may take any time between 10 days to 3 weeks for recovery.

Eyelid Surgery

The eyes are the windows to the soul and it will not do if the curtains are in the way. Eyelid surgery is chosen by those who have severely drooping eyelids and want to look younger. In addition, the surgical procedure also entails the removal of the bags below the eyes. This is done by removing excess muscle, fat, and skin from the area to give it a fresher look. This procedure requires 10 days for recovery. If you wear corrective lenses and have undergone eyelid surgery, you will have to refrain from inserting them for about 2 weeks.

Forehead Lift

Here too the procedure is done through the removal of excess fat, muscle, and tissue from the forehead area. The skin is then tightened and the droops, wrinkles, and lines on the forehead are smoothed out. This is an amazing way to make yourself look younger instantly and give your face a fresher look. This procedure has a recovery period of 1-3 weeks.

Combined Cosmetic Surgery Enhances Results, Saves Time, Money

Featured Article by Dr.Steve Byrd

Cosmetic surgeons around the country, such as Dr. Steve Byrd, one of the top plastic surgeons in Dallas, offer the option for combining procedures. This can produce greater results while reducing cost and downtime.

Dallas, Texas (February 2013) – Many plastic surgeons will give patients the choice of combining plastic surgery procedures into one operation. Dr. Steve Byrd, one of the top plastic surgeons in Dallas says grouping multiple procedures into one visit to the medical center provides many potential benefits for patients: shorter recovery time, cost savings, more complete cosmetic enhancement and overall higher satisfaction.

“There are certain procedures that are commonly performed during one operation,” says Dr. Byrd, a board-certified plastic surgeon familiar with combination procedures. “Facelift with neck lift come to mind. But any number of combination treatments can be customized to the meet the patient’s goals. For instance, I commonly combine a breast lift with breast augmentation in Dallas.”

Commonly grouped procedures include treatments of the head and neck, such as facelift with neck lift, brow lift, eyelid surgery or chin augmentation. Non-surgical treatments can also be combined, either with surgical or other non-surgical procedures. BOTOX® may be used with injectable fillers for a more comprehensive result, or laser skin resurfacing may be used in a facelift procedure. Breast augmentations and breast reductions are often enhanced by breast lifts. Dr. Byrd says he often performs liposuction during a tummy tuck in Dallas.

One of the most common combination procedures has come to be known as a “mommy makeover.” Typically, this makeover involves breast enhancement and tummy tuck. Certain variations may include liposuction, facial surgery or medical spa treatments.

Combining procedures can have advantages for patients, such as less time away from work or other commitments. Instead of having 2 or more separate recovery periods, healing from the separate surgeries occurs simultaneously. The discomfort of surgery is also consolidated, allowing women and men to “get it over with” all at once.

Cost savings also factor into the list of benefits. Fees for the facility, anesthesia and the surgeon make up the main cost categories for plastic surgery.

Completing multiple procedures in one operation adds up to only 1 facility fee, 1 anesthesia fee and reduced surgeon’s fees.

“Most patients find that combining procedures produces an overall higher satisfaction,” says Dr. Byrd. “Because multiple enhancements are achieved, patients see a more complete improvement in their appearance. And since there is less interruption in their lives, they tend to have greater appreciation of what was accomplished.”

The Lip Job and the Real job: The Impact of Plastic Surgery on Your Career

It may sound a little difficult to believe but cosmetic surgery may actually have a positive effect on your career. In fact, studies have even related cosmetic surgery to success in the workplace.

In every debate, however there are naysayers who will be waving their college degrees in front of anyone who will listen citing quite the opposite.

Job security is most precariously balanced in today’s economy and while that college degree will definitely be contributing to your success, cosmetic surgical procedures can actually provide you with that little step up that you have  always needed.

Physical Appearance and Capabilities

There is a lot of emphasis on image in the workplace and many relate appearance to the level of capabilities. Have you ever seen someone and thought, ‘They look like fun’ or ‘They’re so serious and unapproachable’. No matter what their actual personalities are like, these thoughts tend to bounce off our heads involuntarily. While these perceptions hold no meaning they do shape our opinions about people.

Cosmetic Surgery in the workplace

There is a current demand in cosmetic surgery in the workplace to look younger. This is because youth directly translates to vitality, fitness, and health. Youth has now become interchangeable with freshness and innovation which are greatly sought after in today’s economy.

People have started viewing themselves as brands to sell to employers. This means that you need to show them your best face (no pun intended) at the workplace.

Today there are certain procedures that have gained popularity over the years and are known for their effectiveness when it comes to progress within your career.  Everyone is unique in their own way, and these cosmetic procedures have been known to look great for most individuals.

Popular Surgeries for the Workforce

One of the most popular surgeries today are eyelid surgeries which has become the fourth most popular cosmetic procedure in the USA.

Another cosmetic procedure that is popular is that of teeth whitening as they grey with age. Many individuals also opt for nose jobs or the removal of dark circles beneath their eyes. Mini facelifts and a new procedure known as ultherapy have also been gaining traction over the past 5 years. These procedures are aimed towards tightening the face and making candidates look younger.

Cosmetic surgical procedures now provide advanced corrective solutions for people. When making a choice of surgery, understand what you want and do thorough research.

You may also have heard the age old adage that it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Well, plastic surgery too is more than skin deep. In fact, it just might be the little angel whispering encouragements in your ear (one thing we all need in the competitive workforce).

The Effect on the Subconscious

The effects of cosmetic surgery in the workplace go much deeper than that of other people’s perceptions. In fact cosmetic surgery may have an immediate effect on your personal behavior which may translate in the workplace.

Plastic surgery is known to boost confidence and increase self esteem. This improved attitude will allow you to be proactive and exude confidence in the task that you undertake. Plastic surgery may play a psychological role on the manner in which you behave at the workplace.

In a Nutshell

There is no denying that the physical appearance of a person has an immediate and lasting effect on the manner in which we perceive them. This is especially true for first time impressions when you haven’t quite spoken to the individual yet.

Physical appearance has always been an important determinant not only at the time of recruitment but also along the duration of the job. Cosmetic surgery can help you on your way to success and help you leave an impression wherever you go.
