WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation, also called Augmentation mammaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is performed to enhance the shape and size of a woman’s breasts. The procedure can also correct slight sagging of the breast; increase breast firmness; and it can even out breasts that are asymmetrical.
Your cosmetic surgeon will make a small incisions under the bust, in the armpit or the underside of the nipple and insert the implant behind the muscle and tissue. A breast augmentation procedure generally takes about 1-1.5hrs and is carried out under general anaesthetic.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
What type of implants are available to me?
Gel filled Implants are used in over 99% of breast augmentation procedures in Australia. A new, cohesive form of silicone gel was recently developed and is now used in the new generation implants. Because the gel is cohesive, meaning it sticks together in a predetermined shape, it minimises the risk of dispersal should the implant rupture.
-
What shape of implants available to me?
You have an option of a rounded implant or a tear-drop implant. Round implants tend to give you a more rounded, full and elevated look, whereas the tear-drop implants tend to give a more natural, softer look with a naturally sloping upper pole.
-
What are my choices of where the implants are placed?
Breast Implants can be placed either under the breast tissue or partially under the muscle of the chest wall (pectoral muscle). The placement depends on your pre-existing breast shape and size, the amount of tissue in your upper chest, the amount of physical activity you do and the size of implant you wish to have.
-
Where are the incisions made?
You have three different options which are mostly up to you. 1. In the breast crease 2. Through the armpit 3. Around the nipple. All three approaches can achieve excellent results. Your plastic surgeon can discuss these with you at the time of your consultation to determine the most appropriate approach for you.
-
Where is the procedure carried out?
In either a shared private hospital, or our own private hospital.
-
How long does the operation take?
The operation takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the incision, placement and size of implants.
-
What type of anaesthesia will be used?
Optional Local or General anaesthetic.
-
What is the recovery period?
As we are all so unique and individual recovery time can vary from person to person. However we generally advise our patients to take one week off work and suggest that no strenuous exercise is carried out for 6 weeks post surgery.
-
Will this procedure affect my ability to breastfeed in the future?
No they will not as the breast implants do not affect the breast glands and ducts.
